Samarkand – nominee as a candidate for the 25th session of the UNWTO General Assembly

In September 2020, Uzbekistan submitted an application to host the UNWTO General Assembly in Samarkand in 2023. This, in particular, is became known at the interdepartmental meetings of the 65th meeting of the UNWTO European Regional Commission in Samarkand in the online format.

The holding of the 25th session of the UNWTO General Assembly in Uzbekistan, in ancient Samarkand, is an important event for the entire region. Recall that since 1993 Uzbekistan has been a full member of UNWTO, in 1994 the Samarkand Declaration of the participating countries of the international project development of tourism along the Great Silk Road was adopted.

According to many international experts in the field of tourism, Uzbekistan has been implementing ambitious reforms for many years, especially in terms of diversification and development of new types of tourism. More than four thousand historical and architectural monuments are concentrated in Uzbekistan, located in the center of the Great Silk Road.

One of the historical and tourist gems of Uzbekistan, the city of Samarkand has been a key center of the Great Silk Road for many centuries. The capital of the Timurid Empire and later Transoxiana - the historical territory of modern Uzbekistan has always had excellent natural, geographical and cultural opportunities and is still an object of interest for many travelers around the world. In 2001, the city and its historical architectural and archaeological monuments were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List under the name "Samarkand - the crossroads of cultures".

Voting for the venue of the 25th UNWTO General Assembly in 2023 will take place within the framework of the 24th session of the UNWTO General Assembly in Madrid at the end of November this year.
