The State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Tourism Development, the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and Uzbekistan Airports JSC have announced a competition for the best names for the regional international airports of Uzbekistan.

The contest has been announced in order to actively involve the public in determining the best names for Uzbekistan's regional airports, with the exception of Islam Karimov Tashkent International Airport and Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur Andijan International Airport. The competition is open to those aged 16 years and over, including students, creatives, scientists, historians, and others who are interested in tourism development, regardless of their nationality.

To participate in the contest, the entrants must:

Get acquainted with the competition’s terms and conditions on the following websites: https://uzbektourism.uz, https://mintrans.uz, https://uzbairports.uz;

Propose a unique name and describe its significance;

Send the suggested name (in Uzbek, Russian, or English) with a short description of its significance by e-mail to tanlov@uzbektourism.uz. “Airport name” should be written in the subject line.

Two months after the competition announcement, a commission formed of representatives of ministries and agencies, as well as prominent historians and the public, will shortlist five options for each airport. These will be put to an online vote at https://uzbektourism.uz.

Following the results of the online vote, the winning names will be announced on the official websites of the State Committee for Tourism Development, the Ministry of Transport, and Uzbekistan Airports.

When shortlisting the best works to go forward to the online vote, the commission will use the following criteria:

  • originality and attractiveness of the name;
  • relevance of the name to the region where the airport is located;
  • cultural and linguistic suitability (no offensive words or names with negative connotations will be considered);
  • universality and conciseness.

Submissions will only be accepted only online, and should be accompanied by information about the participant (name, age, occupation, contact details, and place of residence).

By participating in the competition, entrants automatically transfer to the competition organizers the exclusive right to use the proposed name or names, without further agreement, acknowledgement, or payment.

The deadline for accepting competition entries is 20 October, 2020.
