The territory of Surkhandarya is unique and mysterious. Here, in the very heart of Central Asia, Buddhist monuments and ancient settlements have been preserved. One of these monuments is the Fayaztepa temple complex dating back to the 1st century BC.
The complex is located on the territory of the ancient city of Termez, between the banks of the Amu Darya and the ancient caravan route. Since the 9th century, the complex has been destroyed and eventually disappeared into the dunes of sand. In 1968, a Buddha figurine was found in this area. Since then, the area has been carefully explored and restored.a
Once there were three large buildings here: a temple, a monastery and a courtyard with utility rooms. The complex impresses with its grandeur and surprises with design solutions. The walls were decorated with plot drawings. The temple consists of nineteen separate rooms with wide ceilings and deep niches in the walls.
To the right of the temple rises a small stupa with a perfectly round dome and a cruciform foundation. The dome was decorated with red lotus flowers. Ritual ablutions were performed here.
In the central part of the temple was a courtyard. He gave the building elegance and originality, because the walls of this courtyard were complemented by columns and relief paintings. In the middle of the courtyard, a Triad was found, which depicts the Buddha sitting under the sacred bodhi tree in a pose of calm and spiritual harmony. The whole composition has become a symbol of divinity, peace and tranquility. The found Triad is the most valuable find and it is stored in the State Museum of the History of Uzbekistan, and its copy can be seen in the Termez Archaeological Museum.
