Historical memory keepers

Uzbekistan was under the rule of various Central Asian, Arab, Turkish and Mongol tribes until the 18th century, when all of Central Asia fell under the colonial expansion of Russia. This culminated in the 1860s and 1870s, when a series of conflicts with the Russian Empire led to the complete conquest of the country, followed by its inclusion in Russia's sphere of influence. After the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, Uzbekistan, along with other Central Asian republics, became one of the 15 socialist republics of the USSR. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union and the attainment of the desired independence in 1991, the Uzbek people were subjected to a crusade to destroy their culture, including mass executions, deportations and arrests.

Thanks to the establishment of schools by the Soviet authorities in the early 1930s, a well-educated Central Asian intelligentsia emerged, ready to fight for independence. The activities of anti-Soviet groups led to the mass execution of tens of thousands of dissidents in Central Asia. Another large-scale scandal in Uzbekistan broke out in the 1980s, when more than 800 criminal cases were initiated in the so-called "cotton case" and thousands of people were sentenced for not delivering enough cotton.

In honor of all those who suffered from the decades of Soviet occupation, 14 museums operate throughout Uzbekistan, including Tashkent and Karakalpakstan. These institutions preserve historical memory by providing access to archival materials, victims' personal belongings, and photographs. The mass trials and political persecutions of the Uzbek people may have been part of another era, but even thirty decades after the country was freed from oppression, these collective memories still echo in the memories of millions.
