Kovun Sayli – Melon Festival

27

Since ancient times, Uzbekistan has been famous for its fragrant melons. In the Middle Ages, when melons ripened, farmers invited elders, neighbors, and relatives to enjoy the harvest and even provided melons to take home for winter. Elders blessed the hosts for a plentiful harvest and prosperity.

Today, melon festivals are held across the regions of Uzbekistan, showcasing numerous varieties such as Chillaki, Kukcha, Kuk Duppi, Kizil Kovun, Obi Novvot, Jura Kand, and Mirzachul melon. Visitors can taste melons and various traditional dishes.

Festivals of other fruits—pomegranates, apples, grapes, figs, and honey—are also organized. Regions specializing in horticulture proudly present their harvests, including the Fergana Valley, Syrdarya, Kashkadarya, Jizzakh, Bukhara, and Samarkand regions.
