May 9: Day of Remembrance and Honor

26

May 9 marks the victory in World War II. On this day, people honor and pay tribute to those who fought courageously for peace and freedom. It is a sacred day of respect for the older generation who endured the hardships, losses, and trials of wartime and postwar years.

Uzbekistan made a significant contribution to the victory: 1,951,000 people from Uzbekistan took part in the war, and more than 1.5 million evacuees—about 250,000 of them children—found refuge in the country. Thousands of wounded soldiers received medical treatment here.

In 1999, Memorial Square was opened in Tashkent, and in 2020, on the 75th anniversary of Victory, Victory Park was inaugurated. This powerful memorial complex reflects the tragedy of war and the suffering of soldiers, prisoners, mothers, wives, doctors, and civilians.

On this day, people visit war veterans with gifts, attend memorial sites and the Eternal Flame, and lay flowers as a symbol of deep respect and gratitude.
