Surrounded on all sides by a clay wall, the inner city of Khiva Ichan-kala has on the western side the main gates for entry – Ata darvaza or Ata house. Their names come from their location, in front of the gate is the Sher Muhammad Ata mosque and the pond hauz.
The gates, 10 meters long and 4 meters wide, was built of burnt brick in 1804-1806. At that time there was a customs post and a currency exchange office, which has not changed at the present time.
In order to preserve the sights of the museum-reserve, in 1975 the gates were reconstructed in accordance with their original appearance under the strict guidance of master Samandar Kalandarov.
