A Botanical Garden will be opened in Urgench

This was decision was made in Senate Committee of the Oliy Majlis on agrarian and water management issues with the participation of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the leadership of the Tashkent Botanical Garden and the scientific and pedagogical staff of Urgench State University.

Modern Khorazm is located on the pre-Aral Sea territory with a difficult ecological situation. Therefore, the issue of creating a green environment is crucial. Despite the environmental problem in the region, there are more than 1000 varieties of plants.

At the seminar, with the participation of scientists and politicians, the issues of planting and cultivating rare plants that can take root in this climate and the creation of a "green land" were voiced. In particular, the meeting discussed the issue of involving young people and students in the development of a new botanical garden in Urgench, planting rare plants and the possibility of students to have practical training here.

Urgench Botanical Garden will be the third in the republic. The first and one of the oldest is the Botanical Garden named after Academician Rusanov in Tashkent and the second is the Botanical Garden named after Amir Temur in the city of Bustan in Karakalpakstan.

The project to create a botanical garden in Khorazm was developed within the framework of the national movement "Yashil Makon" and will be based on the flora from the Nizhneamudarya Biosphere Reserve and rare plants of the Aral region.

Today, in many Khorazm region’s specialized universities, in particular,for scientific research students of biological and environmental spheres, there are not enough appropriate scientific testing ground for plant flora. The participants of the event expressed confidence in creating a favorable environment not only for improving the ecology of the region, but also for creating all conditions for scientific research of young professionals.

The Khorazm region is divided into 3 natural zones: the steppe, sandy zone, the coastal zone of the Amu Darya and the valley. It is planned to create natural flora on the banks of the Shavat Canal and in the city of Urgench. Thus, with the scientific and practical assistance of the Tashkent Botanical Garden, it is planned to create a new botanical garden based on this plant environment.

At a video conference held on February 2, 2022 under the chairmanship of the President of the Republic Sh. M. Mirziyoyev, the tasks of implementing the nationwide project "Yashil Makon", which began in November 2021, were discussed.

At the meeting, the President announced the start of the Green Year national event on March 1. He noted the importance of selecting seedlings suitable for the climate of each region, undemanding to water, increasing the number of nurseries for their harvesting. The State Forestry Committee was instructed to distribute 10 million seedlings of fruit and ornamental trees to the population free of charge, the Committee on Highways was instructed to organize protective plantings along roads of international and republican significance.
