Kofirqala — an ancient fortress near Samarkand

One of Samarkand’s remarkable historical sites is Kofirqala Fortress. This archaeological monument is located 12 kilometers south of the city. Experts believe it was built in the 3rd–4th centuries AD and served as a major fortified settlement in the region.

A heritage of millennia

Kofirqala was more than just a fortress. It was a full-fledged city with palaces, temples, and residential districts. Archaeologists have uncovered numerous artifacts here, including ceramics, frescoes, and coins, reflecting the city's rich cultural and artistic heritage.

A unique artifact — a sample of monumental painting

Among the most significant finds is a rare wall painting dating back about 1,300 years. Discovered in 2019, this colorful fresco depicts female figures and stands out as a unique example of monumental art.

Four years of restoration

The restoration of the fresco took four years. Specialists meticulously worked to restore the artifact’s original appearance. Today, it is proudly displayed at the Samarkand Museum of History.
