One more revered pilgrimage sight for Muslims is the sacred mausoleum of Pakhlavan Makhmud in Khiva. The complex is one of the best architectural monuments of the XIX century, built in the traditional Khorezm style.
This place is sacred because the poet and artisan of the XIII century Pakhlavan Mahmud, who is glorified among the people as an invincible hero and healer, is buried here.
Initially, the building of the mausoleum was modest in size, but as this place became popular among pilgrims, khanaka and mosques were erected here in addition. The building is decorated with a huge blue dome with glazed tiles and sparkling gilded top.
