Sheikh Zayniddin Mosque (Kukcha Mosque)

136

In the Kukcha mahalla of Tashkent's Old Town, stands a mosque named after the Islamic saint Sheikh Zayniddin, whose mausoleum is also located there. The mosque is popularly known as Kukcha due to its location.

Sheikh Zayniddin was born in 1164. He dedicated his life to preaching the teachings of Shahobiddin Suhrawardi, the founder of the Sufi order of Suhrawardi, in what is now Uzbekistan. The saint's mausoleum was built in the late 14th century by order of Tamerlane himself.

Today, the mosque is one of the most beautiful pilgrimage sites in Uzbekistan, having undergone a renovation in 2011, incorporating calligraphy, wood carving, and ganch.

Up to six thousand Muslims can pray in the mosque simultaneously.
